After earning his bachelor’s degree in accounting, Abdoulaye wanted to enter the IT field. While researching, he discovered that Goodwill Columbus offers an industry-recognized credential called CompTIA A+.
“Once I saw that Goodwill offers it for free, it was a no-brainer,” Abdoulaye said.
Abdoulaye completed 15 weeks’ worth of evening classes while working in the daytime. After earning his certification, he was hired into an IT role in December and currently serves as a computer deployment technician.
Throughout the course, Abdoulaye was connected with Fred, an IT Career Consultant for Goodwill.
“Fred kept me motivated,” Abdoulaye said. “He even helped me get my resume in tip-top shape.”
Of Abdoulaye, Fred said, “He was one of the best students in the class. He always asked questions and remained active. I recommended that he tutor others in the class. His study groups were highly successful.”
With Abdoulaye’s help, one student increased their exam score from 615 to above 700 – a 645 was required to pass.
“It was enjoyable to help others. You really have to retain the information to teach concepts to others,” Abdoulaye explained. “So, teaching actually helped me learn.”
Abdoulaye strongly recommends Goodwill’s services to anyone looking for a career pathway.
“I recommend Goodwill for three reasons,” he said. “Financially, it’s free. Second, the credential on your resume stands out to employers. And third, the people who teach the classes at Goodwill are there to help you. If you have the willingness to learn and work hard, they are going to provide the resources and motivation to help you succeed.”
